Service Description

A two-day, 16-hour course in wilderness patient assessment, first aid, and evacuation when medical help is delayed. Practice bleeding control, wound care, splinting, environmental and medical emergencies, spinal injury considerations, and improvised care through hands-on skills and outdoor scenarios. Successful participants receive: • MTN Wilderness First Aid certification • MTN Adult First Aid, CPR & AED for All Ages, after required skills verification • California EMSA epinephrine auto-injector certification Eligible current WFRs may use the course for WFR recertification. Confirm eligibility with MTN before enrolling. Eligible EMS professionals may receive 16 hours of continuing education through Capital City CPR LLC, provider 34-4980. This 16-hour WFA meets NICA’s WFA requirement. CPR/AED training is included. Your CPR/AED certificate is issued separately after required skills verification. No previous medical training is required. NICA coaches: why we recommend WFA We recommend our 16-hour Wilderness First Aid course for every NICA coach. It gives you more time to practice patient assessment, care on the trail, and evacuation decisions. CPR/AED is included. National minimum requirements • Level 1: No national First Aid or CPR requirement. • Level 2: Basic First Aid and CPR certification. • Level 3: NICA-approved First Aid and CPR, or a 16-hour WFA course and CPR. Required CPR training must include an in-person training or assessment component. Leagues may set stricter requirements. Understanding the one-hour rule Level 3 coaches need WFA when practices are more than one hour from definitive care. Estimate the total time from an accident to treatment at an appropriate hospital, including reaching the patient, on-scene care, evacuation, and transport. Straight-line distance and driving time from the trailhead do not tell the whole story.
