The course

Everyday first aid.
Outdoor decisions.

A trail, park, or outdoor worksite changes the setting of an emergency. Equipment may be limited, the weather may change, and help may need clear directions to reach you. Outdoor First Aid builds a basic response around those realities.

The full day combines first aid, CPR/AED, and severe bleeding control with outdoor assessment, injury care, environmental concerns, and team scenarios. It is an introductory outdoor course; our 16-hour Wilderness First Aid course offers more depth and practice for delayed care.

Learn by doing

What you’ll
practice.

Explore the skills, then put them to work through hands-on practice and feedback.

Build a reliable first response
  • Scene safety, patient assessment, and recognizing immediate threats.
  • Calling for help, communicating a location, and organizing the people around you.
  • Adult, child, and infant CPR, AED use, and choking response.
Care for common outdoor injuries
  • STOP THE BLEED skills: direct pressure, wound packing, and tourniquet practice.
  • Wound care and initial care for muscle, joint, and bone injuries.
  • Using available equipment to support and protect an injured person.
Think about the whole situation
  • Recognizing illness and environmental concerns, including heat, cold, and dehydration.
  • Protecting a patient from exposure while help is coming.
  • Considering available resources, access, and the urgency of getting additional care.
Practice as a team
  • Outdoor scenarios built around day outings, group activities, or your work environment.
  • Assessment, communication, and response decisions with feedback.
  • Planning what your team carries and how you will call for help.

Format & completion

Outdoor First Aid.
CPR/AED included.

The eight-hour course includes first aid and CPR/AED certification after successful completion of the required skills and assessments. CPR covers adults, children, and infants. Choose the scheduled course that matches the credential your organization requires.

Who it’s for

For people preparing for day hikes, mountain bike rides, outdoor group activities, volunteer work, and outdoor workplaces who want more practice than a basic four-hour class provides.

Before class

Come prepared.

Experience

No previous medical training is required.

What to bring

Clothing and footwear for the stated outdoor setting, weather layers, water, food, and a small day pack.

Before you book

Check the class location and outdoor activities. Contact us about access needs or the certificate your employer or organization requires.

Choose your training

When care may be delayed,
choose WFA.

We recommend 16-hour Wilderness First Aid for people responsible for others in remote settings. It provides more time to develop patient assessment, care, and evacuation decisions. For NICA coaches, use the national and league requirements to choose the correct course; the general Outdoor First Aid title alone does not establish NICA approval.

Good to know

Course questions.

Is CPR/AED included in the eight hours?

Yes. CPR/AED is included in the course and in the certification requirements.

Is Outdoor First Aid the same as Wilderness First Aid?

Outdoor First Aid is an eight-hour introduction with outdoor practice. MTN WFA is a separate 16-hour course with more time for wilderness patient care and evacuation decisions. Choose WFA when your role requires that credential.

Can the scenarios focus on our team?

Yes. Tell us about your activities, participants, likely hazards, and access to help. We can shape the practice around your setting while retaining the course’s core learning objectives.
